Youth Design Workshops 2017- 2018
October 2017- April 2018
Our youth workshops take a step up, with students tackling social, environmental, and engineering challenges. With extended and an emphasis on more conceptual issues and demanding engineering concepts, these workshops are perfect for older students. Hosted at local architectural offices, SAF staff and volunteer architects support participants as they plan, build, and present solutions to imaginative and thought-provoking design challenges.
Cost: Season pass grants you one free admission, six events for the price of 5 $25/workshop, lunch included. Scholarships available upon request – no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
Location: Workshops are held at Seattle area architecture firms, and will be announced in advance of the workshop.
Sat, Oct 14 from 11am - 3pm
Did you know we used to have our very own amusement park right here in Seattle? Learn about our own Luna Park (and Fun Forest), and how difficult it is to design a place as big as a theme park while hiding all the things that make it tick, while also making sure nothing falling from those coasters hits anybody, you know?
Sat, Nov 11 from 11am - 3pm
Why cut down trees to build a house when you can just build IN the tree? In this workshop students will explore how to build a safe, beautiful home in the boughs that also respects its host. Will also explore creative ways to protect Seattle’s own tree canopy.
Sat, Jan 13, 2018 from 11am - 3pm
In this workshop, we’ll focus more on the aesthetics of architecture. Exploring some of the more visually adventurous buildings, both of the past and recent history, students will create designs where the exterior more than hints about what’s happening inside.
Sat, Feb 10, 2018 from 11am - 3pm
What’s more local than food grown right in the city? As Seattle becomes denser everyday, and the planet becomes ever warmer, growing green spaces in our city become ever more important. Working with landscape architects, participants will design their own living buildings and edible landscapes.
Sat, Mar 10, 2018 from 11am - 3pm
Seattle needs more housing! Where will we put it? Where WON’T we put it? Alleyways, rooftops, under bridges, over bridges, in parking lots, underground? Youth will design creative solutions to Seattle’s housing problem, finding vibrant living spaces for everyone.
Sat, Apr 14, 2018 from 11am - 3pm
As we move around more and more, whether by choice or necessity, our homes are the one thing we simply can’t bring with us. Or can we? In this workshop, students will explore the many instances in which portable architecture becomes a necessity, and design their own solutions.
